Job Summary:
The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Civil Litigation Division/Tobacco Enforcement Unit is seeking a Legal Assistant II to assist in the investigation and prosecution of civil and criminal violations of state tobacco laws and violations of the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement.
Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.
This position will assist in planning, coordinating, and recording statewide tobacco retailer compliance inspections with other law enforcement and local and county agencies as needed. The employee will prepare reports based on inspection data and will assist in preparing exhibits and documents for court as necessary. The employee will recruit and train youth volunteers throughout the state to assist with conducting tobacco retailer compliance inspections, and will track and maintain records of all youth volunteers participating in the program. The employee will assist in maintaining records related to enforcement of Arizona's ban on the delivery sale of tobacco products, including records related to online sting operations.
The employee will file all citations issued by TEU agents with the appropriate Justice Court, will assist in responding to requests from the court and county or local prosecutors, and will track the disposition of each case. The employee will also assist with coordination and implementation of the tobacco diversion program.
The employee will attend meetings with ADHS, Bureau of Tobacco and Chronic Diseases (BTCD) representatives, and youth agencies, and participate in training workshops as necessary in furtherance of the objectives of TEU.
• Knowledge of pertinent statutes and regulations governing the manufacture, sale, advertising, and distribution of tobacco products, as well as the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement.
• Knowledge to file citations with the court and track ongoing cases, prepare spreadsheets, subpoenas, demand letters, exhibits and other documents as required by the prosecutor, investigator, or other investigative or regulatory agency.
• Knowledge of court rules and practices, legal research methods and sources.
• Knowledge of policies and procedures established for the State of Arizona, Attorney General's Office, Consumer Protection & Advocacy Section and the Tobacco Enforcement Unit.
• Basic knowledge of accounting, bookkeeping, and bank account reconciliation procedures.
• Effective communication skills to coordinate and act as liaison with other law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
• Mathematical skills to perform financial and statistical calculations.
• Time management skills to effectively plan and coordinate tobacco operations.
• Computer skills using Excel, Word, and in-house software programs such as CMS 2.
• Organizational skills to efficiently manage inter-agency operations and maintain proper rotation of youth volunteers.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Ability to analyze financial records, invoices, and other business documents.
• Ability to communicate and work with high school aged children, including providing instruction and training to youth volunteers.
• Ability to effectively organize and manage law enforcement operations such as tobacco sting operations.
Prior experience in working with minors of age. Public speaking and recruiting experience. Computer skills with the Microsoft Office Suite of products including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and Power Point presentations. Prior experience working in or with the Arizona Justice Courts.
Pre-Employment Requirements: • Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
