Job Summary:
Works with minimal supervision. The abandoned mines supervisor position will be responsible for directing the search and cataloguing of abandoned/inactive mines in the state. Locating and inventorying abandoned mines is vital since it may pose significant physical safety hazards to the public, and may impact water resources, and wildlife. The abandoned mine supervisor's primary concern will be to locate, survey, evaluate and determine the method of closure for the abandoned/inactive mines.
This position requires daily travel, with overnight stays of up to one week duration. Subject to physical exertion including. Possible overnight stays of up to one week duration. The position will include physical exertion in performance of duties, including distance hiking in desert and mountain terrain.
This position will require the ability to drive a 4 wheel vehicle and the ability to create scope of work plans for the closure/securing of abandoned mines.
Additionally, the abandoned mines supervisor will require the skills and abilities to work with contractors, review and implement the plans, create and develop reports for abandoned mine sites, maintain and update the database of abandoned mine reports and write quarterly and annual reports detailing all field work completed for previous quarter.
Job Duties:• Interpersonal relations, as applied to contracts with other Agency staff, representatives of other governmental agencies, private industry, the media and the public
• Meeting with contractors, review and implement the plans to close and secure the abandoned mines after the bid has been awarded to the contractor
• Maintain and update the database of abandoned mine reports. Write quarterly reports detailing all field work completed for previous three months
• Create and develop reports on each abandoned mine site which will include the map reading and report writing
• Develop the scope of work for the contracts regarding the closure/securing the abandoned mines
• Directing the search and cataloguing of abandoned/inactive mines in the state
• Conduct investigations on abandoned mine complaints
Knowledge:
• Interpersonal relations, as applied to contracts with other Agency staff, representatives of other governmental agencies, private industry, the media and the public
• Knowledge of basic mapping techniques including Global Position Satellite (GPS) unit, plus conventional methods
• Knowledge with the environmental effects of hazardous substances that are related to mining operations
• Knowledge and skills in directing the search and cataloguing of abandoned/inactive mines in the state
• The individual instruct, and evaluate abandoned mine surveyors
• Computer experience developing and modifying flat databases
Skills:
• Skills in map reading which including both topographic and land status maps
Ability:
• Ability to work with contractors, review and implement the plans to close and secure the abandoned mines after the bid has been awarded to the contractor. This includes the ability to monitor the budget pertaining to the project
• Ability to Supervise and direct directives of abandoned mine surveyors and volunteers
• Ability to create scope of work plans for the closure/securing the abandoned mines
• Ability to act as interagency contact in affairs regarding abandoned mines
• Ability to understand the geographical location systems in Arizona
• Ability to conduct investigations on abandoned mine complaints
• Ability to forecast future projects
• The AZ State Mine Inspector may waive the educational requirement in lieu of experience
• Experience in fields under the jurisdiction of the AZ State Mine Inspector
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver license record checks, required to maintain acceptable driving records and complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code )
• Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver license appropriate to the assignment (Minimum of Class D - CLASS A Optional)
